Event: The Power of Emerging Technologies

Event: The Power of Emerging Technologies

On Thursday 31st May, Activate partnered with the Local Growth Hub for its latest business breakfast, which brought together over 75, entrepreneurs, academics and business advisors the Liverpool City Region to hear how harnessing the power of emerging technologies can accelerate business growth.

Guests from across the digital and creative sector gathered at Barclays Eagle Labs at Avenue HQ, to find out how Activate is supporting SMEs in the digital and creative sector to implement emerging technologies such as  AI, Big Data, High Performance Computing and Cloud technologies and learn about the legalities to consider when starting a business.

Kicking off the panel was Legal Director, Gary Davies and the DLA Piper team, who discussed the legal elements that startups need to consider, especially in a time when more and more companies are investing in the likes of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The law firm addressed the importance of corporate structure, Intellectual Property (IP), and tax – to name a few. To support start-up companies with legal issues DLA Piper are launching the companies first free Legal Start Up Pack.

Next up, was Jonathon Clark, business and technology manager for Activate. Delegates heard how the project is already driving growth across the region by helping businesses implement emerging technologies. Jonathon discussed how new technologies – such as augmented reality (AR), big data, IoT, and the cloud- can help rather than hinder digital and creative companies.

Speaking about Activate, Johnathon said: “We offer businesses a clear path when adopting emerging technologies to help them on their journey. We help them work out if their innovative idea is feasible, if it is technologically possible, and assist in getting the product to market.”

Not just taking Jonathon’s word for it, guests heard first-hand from SMEs that have grown significantly through support from the Activate programme. Following working with Activate partner, Liverpool Business School, Anthony Hagan, creative director at AR Independent, has developed his AR application, Aug-It!, a augmented & mixed reality, & ‘immersive media app.  Practical support given has enabled Ant to secure his first client, Dockside Dining, which will use the app to become the city’s first immersive dining experience.

Anthony said: “I am blown away by the level of business support that I have received through
LCR Activate. When I started it wasn’t the money that I needed, it was genuine
business support – and that’s what I got.”

Anthony Young, the co-founder and CEO of IQ Blade, a competitive insight and market intelligence platform, that has also expanded following working with data scientists from LJMUs Faculty Of Engineering & technology.

Anthony added: “Through Activates support, we have been able to develop two new functions into our software that are going to help us sell IQ Blade to more companies. We received practical support – not just theoretical – which has moved us along hugely, all whilst owning our own IP.”
